The Story behind the painting.

If you have watched some of my other videos you have noticed I sometimes use common objects in an artistic way. I do this because many types of art are far removed from the average person. Creating art with things people come in contact with in their daily lives closes that gap.

So the idea for this piece came from…what else…eating cheetos. My fingers turned orange and I noticed it created an accidental mark on my clothes. From there my thoughts went to fabric as a surface….poof…it made me think of velvet paintings. The Virgin of Guadalupe, Unicorns, and probably the most famous incarnation of velvet painting. The Velvet Elvis. It’s kitsch. It’s cheesy. Thus a Velvet Elvis painted with cheese puffs.

Speed Drawing both hands same time ! theportraitart

Friday, May 7th, 2010

check out my site: http://www.ThePortraitArt.com

practice vid link:

definitely one of my most difficult project, the idea was just too interesting to not give it a try
————————————————–

the approach

It is next to impossible to focus on two things simultaneously, it is however, possible to always keep both hands moving…

I make sure one hand knows how and where to move for the next few strokes while I focus on the other hand, Basically rapidly switching attention between the two. Most times when one of my hand is about to draw something difficult like a specific curve, i would move my other hand to draw something simple like filling an area with shade that needs repetitive strokes. This way I manage to keep both hands moving while alternating focusing on each hand in rapid succession. (for example when i was drawing Morgan freeman’s mouth with my left, i move my right hand to draw the Tim’s hair since it requires much less attention and accuracy, in fact for most the video when one hand is doing something defining the other is doing shading )

This approach allow me to finish two portraits in way less time than the time I would spent drawing two consecutive portraits with my dominant hand… the process is very tiring, after a hour of constantly switching attention I do feel a little crazy..
