How much would a watercolor painting cost?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

I have been asked to create a watercolor painting on a 20×15 board. How much should I charge? I am a sophomore at college.

This questions is a little bit like asking how much a car costs, so many factors play into it that there is no set number. The value depends greatly on the artists themselves but also the cost of supplies, your location, your level of talent, if you have sold pieces before, even if the person is family, a friend or total stranger (you would probably give family and friends a better deal). Generally the cost of supplies is less then $40, it’s your time and talent that you are selling. My suggestion is to be honest about what you think you deserve and talk with the person commissioning the piece. I’m sure the two of you will come up with a number you can both be happy with.

How to WaterColor!

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Here we see different methods: watercolor pencils as well as a nice set of watercolor paint in tubes, applied with brushes. Four examples. Two demonstrate starting with a drawing; in one, ink and other pens are applied to solidify form and experiment with textured colors. One is a free hand painting done with the extra paint I’d spread. The last one, incomplete at this time, shows working with a landscape, from life, then referring to a picture later.

How do I ship an unframed watercolor painting safely?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

I want to ship an unframed watercolor painting done on thick watercolor paper safely through the US post office. What is the safest way to package it so that it does not get damaged?

Buy a large cardboard tube from the post office.

Sending paper items are safer gently rolled up rather than in a flat pack/

What is the best way to airbrush with watercolor based colors on canvas?

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

I am working on a new airbrush project, and normally I just use illustration board so frisket normally works fine as a masking material. This project is much larger than I can get in illustration board, so I have a canvas that I am working on.

I have done some research and most seem to only pertain to airbrushing with acrylic paint. I want to use the watercolor becuase of the look I am going for.

My main problem is that I tried using Frisket as the masking material; but it did not want to stick all that well. Does anybody have any ideas on what I can do for masking material on canvas?

badger frisket is stronger tack than most. The next problem will be you can’t put it over paint because it will pull up.Try loose stencils (acetate) with weights.I also don’t think watercolors will work on canvasthey will just run off.(unless you are using raw canvas.)

How to fix a bite mark in a watercolor painting?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

I have been working on watercolor painting that is about 30" by 24" and it is not finished yet. It is Fabriano paper that I am working on and my kitten bit into it. Normally the animals in my house are kept out of my studio, but I had brought the painting downstairs to transport somewhere and he bit into it. It’s a small few holes on the part that is not painted in yet. Any suggestions on how to fix it? Thanks!

I bet if you go on the back of the paper, get it really really wet just over the puncture marks, let it sit, and then work the paper back and forth with a small tool, like a cuticle pusher, in really small strokes, it might help blend the paper fibers and "heal" the paper. keep the worked spot small, and keep it flat while it dries so the paper doesn’t warp. Try it on a scrap piece of the same type of paper first.

What are some artists that use unique watercolor techniques for their work?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

Hello! I need some ideas to paint my piece but I would like to branch out of the regular watercolor techniques that just involve slabbing some paint on. I would like to do something out of the ordinary, so please inspire me.

Thanks! :D

There are a lot of techniques you can use in your watercolors. Look through the watercolor books out there. Some demonstrate each technique. The one I can remember off the top of my head are: glazing; wet on wet on dry; dry brush; sprinkling salt on a wet wash and letting it dry before removing; splattering; dropping a drop of bleach or alcohol (try one or the other and see which one you like) onto a strong wash and letting it dry; gently scraping a painted surface with a credit card or Exacto knife or even your fingernail; rubbing a candle over an area then adding a second layer of paint; dropping strong contrasting colors onto a wet wash; using masking fluid;; taking a damp sponge loaded with paint and dabbing the paper; putting different vivid paint on the paper and then topping it with Saran Wrap, scrunching the Saran Wrap and letting it dry before removing; scaping white or colored chalk on top of a damp wash; Blotting a damp area with a textured paper towel or string and then letting it dry; painting a piece of fabric or paper doily or even a leaf and stamping an area; drawing on your watercolor with crayons in limited areas. Just mentioned the ones I remember off of the top of my head… My head hurts a bit after all that info was retrieved… ll Hope some techniques interest you. Recently, I did test squares showing each technique. a lot of them make for pretty interesting textures. Enjoy!

what is the best way to mount watercolor paper?

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

I’m interested in showcasing some of my watercolor paintings, what is the best way to mount them for viewing? Also what is the cheapest?

If you are experienced in mat cutting, you may consider going that route or buying pre-cut mats. You will also need a cardboard backing for your mats. If you would like to try matting yourself and don’t have experience, I suggest you go here http://www.luminous-landscape.com/tutorials/matting.shtml or http://www.altosezmat.com/index.html to learn how to mat safely and correctly. It aslo allow to plan for the future projects if you would like to take a more professional approach.
