When painting roses on oil canvas, start with an undertone and use a model of rose, making sure to note that the petals of roses overlap. Find out how to add stems and leaves to paintings of roses with help from an artist in this free video on painting roses on oil canvas.

I just bought some oil paintings and i bought a set of like 20 paint brush’s but they all got ruined and the oil paint wouldn’t come off and dried on it so i couldn’t use them anymore.
What type of brush’s should i use?
Bristle brushes are the best for oil or acrylic because they are a bit stiff. Since these paints are thick and need to be ‘pushed’ as opposed to water color brushes which are softer and more absorbent because you need more of a ‘flow’ with the paint.
Hog bristle is the most common and synthetic bristle is good too. Sable is a bit soft for most oil painting but can be used for detail. They also can get very expensive.
Buy the best you can afford and keep them clean and they will last a long time.

I have 2 old religious oil paintings and I would like to know if the paintings are copies or possibly original works of art, neither one is signed.
Photograph the paintings and send the images to;

("arts and humanities" then "painting")

I have several old family paintings. I believe they are oil but I am not sure. Through the years they have gotten dirty. Dust and yellow lines running down them. I don’t know what has caused this. What can I use to clean them with out damaging the picture?
Thank you
Red
If you really love them take them to a specialist. He/she will remove the dirt and the varnish and re-varnish the painting and it will look like new.
Do it yourself and you will be in a world of hurt.
But if you really have to. Start wil cotton-wool rolled on a stick. dampen with water and systematically roll them over the painting. Start at the bottom and work your way up in strips. Do not rub. Do not push. Do not leak. Refresh the cotton every few turns and keep your water clean.
If you are done you repeat the process with a varnish solvent. Be very careful to only dissolve the varnish and not the painting. When you are done you re-varnish the painting.

Oil paintings on canvas with wood stretchers were accidentally stored in damp conditions (leaky garden shed) for many years. Patches of black mold are growing on the back of some paintings, white mold on the backs of others. The black mold is starting to show through on the painted side.
These are family portraits, painted 50 years ago by a beloved family member. We are sick to see this damage and can’t figure out how to treat the mold without further staining or damaging the painting. The paintings are typically about 18×24.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

I would have them cared for by a professional art restorer if they are precious to you. You don’t want to try someone’s suggestion and have it make things worse.
