Sunday, May 30th, 2010

Jamel Gaines and Creative Outlet Dance Theatre of Brooklyn (contemporary guest artists) present dance as the main ingredient fused with theater, voice, poetry, film and live music. Much more than entertainment, their repertory draws attention to social and cultural issues. Jamel is the Founder and Artistic Director of the company. He was raised in Queens, NY and began his career as a choreographer at SUNY/Purchase, where he graduated with a BFA and received scholarships from Harry Belafonte and Alvin AileyAmerican Dance Center. Over the past fourteen years, Mr. Gaines has choreographed and staged over 50 concert and repertory productions. His work includes choreography for the Alvin Ailey Dance Center, the Martha Graham School of Dance and the American Black Film Festival/Film Life Awards Ceremony among numerous others. Jamel choreographed and instructed for the DT Performance and Intensive in 2003, 2004 and 2008. creativeoutlet.org

What is a contemporary issue that will have a significant impact on the global community in the future?

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

I have to do my final AP World project about a contemporary issue that will have and impact of the global community in the future. It has to be something other then global warming, poverty and stuff like that. Something interesting and not so general.

The biggest impact on the future of the global community is globalization itself.
Although most of the time it is only considered as an economical term, globalization actually means that we are all interconnected at all levels of existence, and we depend on each other for our survival.
So our future, and actually our survival depends on how humanity adjusts to this closed, global system our world has become.
We need to learn the laws governing such closed systems, and we have to start implementing these laws.
I hope it helps, all the best.

MICHAEL SHANNON Contemporary Ballet “Bach Solo Pas De Deux Trio” for CONFIGURATION DANCE THEATRE

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

YouTube dance video features American contemporary ballet choreography, “(1) Prelude, (2) Sarabande Pas De Deux, and (3) Gigue” from the New York City production, “What’s the Pointe” to Johann S. Bach by Los Angeles California choreographer, MICHAEL SHANNON, for Configuration Dance Theatre, the people’s choice for ARTVOICE Best Dance Company Award in 2008 and 2009, and YAGP Outstanding Choreographer in 2008.

Shannon’s “What’s the Pointe” was featured in “DANCE SPECTACULAR” (9/22/09) by its producer, New York City Ballet star, Daniel Ulbricht, with dance stars from New York City Ballet and Boston Ballet in “Apollo,” “Tarantella,” “Diamond Pas De Deux,” and “Who Cares” authorized by the Balanchine Foundation, with “Royenne” by Susan Jaffe, and “Breathless” by Joseph Cipolla, “whose acclaimed company is known for its cutting-edge contemporary choreography,” said Ulbricht.

The New York Times called choreography by Michael Shannon “sexy, ballet to blush by.” The Buffalo News said, “captivating, genius, utterly superb, deeply emotional and affecting, intimate, sensual, reminds one of Ek, Kylian and Rhoden, bravo finally realism in ballet,” and The Cape Cod Chronicle said his works were, “nothing short of astonishing in his understanding and the physical communication of emotion from comical to tender.”

YouTube video of “What’s the Pointe features award winning Ellison Ballet dancers in New York City: Christina Schifano in the Bach Prelude Solo (Colorado Ballet, YAGP 2008 Gold Medal in Contemporary Dance, Ensemble Silver, Classical Ballet Bronze); Sarah Poss (Dutch National Ballet, YAGP Ensemble Silver Medal), Christina Schifano, Kaleigh Schock (Ballet West, YAGP 2008 Pas De Deux Gold Medal) in the Bach Gigue Trio; and from Nashville Ballet, Sadie Harris and Jon Upleger in the Bach Sarabande Pas De Deux.

Shannon was Principal Dancer for the Bolshoi Ballet, Stars of the Bolshoi Ballet, Vienna State Opera Ballet, Englands Birmingham Royal Ballet, and Principal Guest Artist for the Kremlin Palace Ballet Theatre, and Hungarian State Opera Ballet. The Russian Nobility League invited him to become Director of the Revived Russian Imperial Theatre of Opera and Ballet. He was co-Artistic Director of the Russiches Kammertheater Berlin, and was awarded Professor of Choreography from the Ukrainian State Academy of Ballet in 1999.

Shannon was trained by legends in the ballet world on scholarships from California to the School of American Ballet in New York and National Ballet School of Canada. In 1986, the Bolshoi’s Academy Director, Madame Golovkina, told People Magazine how she discovered Shannon at 16, and by 19, he was their first American scholarship recipient and graduate, and first American Principal Dancer of the Bolshoi, with commendations from Presidents Bush and Clinton, and invitations to dance for President and Mrs. Gorbachev in Moscow, and President and Mrs. Ford in Vail.

President George H.W. Bush honored Shannon and his accomplishments in a letter presented to him at Town Hall of California (7 Aug 1990): “As the first American to become a member of the esteemed Bolshoi Ballet, Michael has brought great honor to himself and his country. Realizing his dreams through persistence and hard work, he is a role model, and has served as an able representative of the United States abroad. We are very proud of this native son.”

President William J. Clinton rote him after returning from Moscow in 1993, “Your dedication to ballet has given you the opportunity to be a part the tradition of great Russian dancers. You can take pride in knowing that you carry with you the hopes and dreams of many aspiring dancers.”

How can i be a contemporary artist when i hate comtemporary art?

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

By definition, i am a contempory artist by living at this moment. But i am not a contemporary minded person. Contemporary art and its associated scene is a turn off. I do not want to participate!! But i keep making this stuff once called art…..

Put those emotions into your art, make something totally new, which is what art is supposed to be. You could come up with something totally amazing. Just transfer your feelings onto paper. Sure, you hate contemporary art, and the art you make doesn’t have to be called that. Art gives you freedom and independence, use them to your advantage.

Where can I find a contemporary rug for a good price?

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010

I’m looking for a rug with red as the main color. It needs to be contemporary/modern with a geometric or abstract design. I’ve tried Target, Pier 1, Pottery Barn, Ikea, West Elm and even Walmart and neither of them have a rug that I just love. Does anyone know of a cool contemporary home store (not on the list) that may have what I’m looking for?

Sometimes you can find nice rugs at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I’ve seen some contemporary designs in bold geometrics at those places. Also, I’ve seen a good selection at www.Overstock.com, on the internet. Their shipping is very low, too. Of course, ordering off the internet is sometimes risky because you can’t actually see what you’re getting. But if you can find a design you like, and the colors don’t have to be an exact "match," or if you can START with the color and work from there, it may be a good solution.

Hope you can find some useful advice here on Answers. Good luck!

What would you define as Contemporary Theatre?Where does it start and where odoes it end?

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

I’ve got to teach a unit on Contemporary Theatre to University Level students. There is so much material I don’t know where to start. When in the 1900s does it start? Is it Contemporary now or ‘In your face Theatre’? Is that a sub-genre?

American theater has been around since the late 1800’s with the minstral shows. The early 1900’s brought about vaudeville.

I would start teaching theater probably beginning in the late 1930’s to the present. I’d begin with the musicals of Richard Rodgers and others. The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, The Music Man, Bye Bye Birdie, and so on are still very popular today.

You could also move the starting time up to the 1950’s and define contemporary as ideas that resonate with today’s audience. In this case discuss the plays of Arthur Miller: Death of a Salesmen, An Enemy of the People, and The Crucible. Also include the plays of Sam Shepard and the plays of Tom Stoppard.

For musicals inclde Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Miss Saigon, and so on.
